Hear from ‘Meastra del chisme”
I’m Alexis Elisa Macedo; I say my full name because it is worth every letter.
I’m a daughter, sister, godmother, an artist, proud chismosa, and a survivor of domestic violence.
When I became comfortable enough to share my story, I was met with an overflow of women who had similar stories, in different fonts. While the person, place, and generation varied...the cycle of violence was the terrible, consistent, invisible thread that connected us.
That’s at the heart of each chisme. “This is what happened to me…and here’s what I know now.” Teaching us not to repeat the cycle, only after you’ve left it. Never as a warning. Never before.
I found myself furious and heartbroken with my ancestors and community of survivors who only granted me admission into the chisme, because I experienced that trauma…and survived.
WHY DIDN’T Y’ALL TELL ME THIS CHISME SOONER?? We’ve seen that survival isn’t always the outcome.
Instead of using chisme to stop a cycle we have to experience, why isn’t chisme shared to prevent experiencing the cycle?
As a proud chismosa, I founded the Chisme Saves Lives Project to destigmatize how we view our ancestral art of storytelling. As vulnerable as sharing your story is, you are not alone. You have the power to extend and rewrite the ending. Our experiences are communal, and by being good chismosas, we have the power to hold space for our community and play a vital role in penning the next chapter in a survivor’s story.
Tengo chisme…
